iPhone X vs XR: Which One Is A Better Choice And Why?

Apple has ruled the smartphone market with their iPhones for many years now. Like clockwork, you can always expect a new version to come out and sweep you off your feet once every year or two.

While iPhones have never been cheap, recently, Apple has decided to adopt a similar approach to other smartphone brands. As a result, they came out with a more “budget” line, the iPhone XR. You could call it a companion to the iPhone X. But how do these two phones compare to each other? How would we rate the iPhone X vs XR?

It’s no wonder if you’re confused and unsure which model to buy. They have some similarities and some differences, and most notably, a different price tag. If you’re on the fence on the matter of “iPhone X vs XR”, we’re here to help you out. In our extensive guide, we will compare iPhone X vs XR and help you make your choice.

iPhone X vs XR — Product Overview

Before we can even begin to talk about how these two Apple phones compare to each other, we need to make sure you know them in and out. What camera do they have? How many inches does the screen have? What kind of storage can you expect from an iPhone X vs XR? We will address all of these questions below.

    iPhone X

iPhone X is the first smartphone in the age of Apple’s new redesign. It may have been a risky move to change the tried-and-tested formula that worked for Apple for so many years, but in the case of the iPhone X, it really paid off.

What’s new in the X compared to older iPhones? Apple got rid of the home button, altered the design of the phone, and made the screen better than ever before. Let’s get down to details.

    Display & Design

iPhone X looks a little different from previous Apple phones, but it’s all for the best. This smartphone has a very premium design, centered around glass and stainless steel, which makes up for the high price. It comes in two colors: silver and space grey.

The removal of the home button allowed Apple to increase the screen space, ending up with an enormous 5.8 inches. You’ll be surprised by how big this phone is — it measures at 143.6mm x 70.9 mm x 7.7 mm and weighs 174g.

Nearly the entire front side of the phone is comprised of the screen, and the borders are very thin. However, Apple stayed true to its former design in one way: the notch at the top has not changed. It still holds the camera for photos and Face ID, making the border a bit wider.

Aside from size, the screen simply blows you away with its beauty and high-quality. It’s undoubtedly the best iPhone screen prior to the arrival of the iPhone XS. This phone has a Super Retina OLED HDR display. The colors you’ll see on it are outstandingly beautiful, and their reproduction is near-perfect.

The entire phone is waterproof, which will be a happy piece of news if you tend to use your phone near the water. It’s IP67 certified to be water and dust-resistant. It will survive being submerged up to 1 meter for a maximum of 30 minutes.

    Camera

The camera quality has always played a big part in why many people choose Apple over Android. iPhones have excellent cameras that will help you capture all the important moments in your life in the quality they deserve.

In the back of the phone, you’ll find 12 MP dual cameras that can capture HD videos and photos. The back cameras are equipped with Auto HDR and they’re capable of producing 4K videos with up to 60 FPS. The front camera is a 7 MP F 2.2 True Depth model that comes with Portrait Mode and Lighting. It’s perfect for taking selfies by yourself or with friends.

    Storage

Apple iPhones are notorious for not allowing you to add any extra storage. The X is not any different in that regard. However, you get plenty of room for your files built into the phone, so almost all users should not mind this.

iPhone X has two storage options: a 64GB phone and a 256GB phone. Of course, the latter is going to cost you more, so make sure you are okay with a bigger expense.

    Other Features

Other than the brilliant screen and a fantastic camera, iPhone X has a lot to offer you in other departments. We will cover some of those features below.

    Processor

If you’re wondering about what the iPhone XR vs X or iPhone XR vs XS comparisons might look like, we’re here to clear that up for you. iPhone X runs on a Hexa-core Apple A11 Bionic chip with a neural engine. The A11 Bionic chip is slightly worse than the one found in the XR, which is an Apple A12 Bionic Chip with a neural engine.

    Face ID

Face ID is Apple’s flagship facial recognition system. It replaces the fingerprint scanner, also known as Touch ID, which is still used in many competitor smartphones. It makes unlocking your phone easier than ever. After a simple setup process, you will be able to unlock the phone as long as your eyes, nose, and mouth are in front of the camera. It doesn’t even matter if you’re in a dark room — your phone will scan your face easily.

You might be slightly skeptical about Face ID, and we get that. Many brands have tried to use this feature before, and usually, they failed. However, Apple has really improved the biometric tech that is used here, so we are more than satisfied with the result.

Face ID offers more than simply unlocking your device. You can use it for lightning-fast payments, apps, and more. It offers more safety than most other security measures.

    Wireless Charging

Wireless charging is slowly becoming the norm with premium smartphones, and the iPhone X makes no exception. It works with Qi charges and allows you to refill its battery without a hassle.

    Animoji

All iPhone users fell in love with the Animoji. Super-fun for kids, but let’s be real, also everyone else, these special types of emoji make use of Apple’s facial recognition software. You can easily animate yourself into one of the emojis. Watch the Animoji move and talk as you do and have fun sending these to friends.

    Overall

This is a top-quality phone. It has a lot of connectivity options, from Wi-Fi to Bluetooth. It maintains Apple’s most beloved tools, such as Siri and Animoji. It also provides good audio & takes great photos.

You’ll love it for its reliability, premium feel, and a fantastic range of features.

    Pros
    • High-quality, durable & sleek premium design
    • Larger, ultra-bright, OLED screen
    • Two cameras in the back and one in the front, 12MP/7MP F 2.2
    • Storage of up to 256GB
    • Ideal for movies, photos, gaming, and other use
    • Super-developed Face ID software
    Cons
    • It’s quite expensive
    • This is a large phone, so if you have small hands you will not be able to use it one-handed
    • No dual SIM

    iPhone XR

Now that you’re familiar with the high-end iPhone X, let’s take a look at Apple’s slightly more budget option — the iPhone XR. That will help you answer the dilemma of iPhone X vs XR.

    iPhone XR

XR is the newer model of the two. It has a bigger screen and an arguably better processor. However, it offers a lot of the same features, including Wi-Fi access and facial recognition. What else can you find in an iPhone XR?

    Display & Design

In terms of design, you might consider XR the winner of the “iPhone X vs XR” debate. This is simply because it comes in a range of vibrant colors, whereas X only has two color themes. iPhone XR is a real eye-candy amongst other smartphones. It gives you a sleek design and many colors of the rainbow to choose from: black, white, blue, yellow, red, and coral.

XR stays true to Apple’s new iPhone design started by X. The home button has been removed and the 6.1″ screen stretches from edge to edge. The only exception is the front camera which takes up a bit of the top portion of the screen, but this is something you’ll find in most smartphones.

The phone itself is bigger and heavier than iPhone X, measuring at 150.9 mm x 75.7 mm x 8.3 mm. It weighs 194g. This is not a device that you will easily use with one hand. You’ll notice that the chassis doesn’t have the same premium look as X does because it was made out of aluminum and not stainless steel.

We loved the screen in iPhone X for its amazing colors and high-quality. This one doesn’t disappoint either, although it’s not deemed to be as good as X. It is bigger with its 6.1 inches, but the panel is not an OLED but a simple LCD.

Like the X, iPhone XR is water and dust-resistant with the same IP67 certification. You can submerge it for up to 30 minutes in a depth of up to 1 meter without damaging the phone.

    Camera

iPhone X vs XR — the debate continues as we talk about taking photos and videos. XR only has a singular rear camera, but it also has 12MP. You won’t get quite the same photo quality out of this one, but it can still record 4K video at up to 60 FPS. Like the X, it also lets you record 1080p slo-mo videos at 240 FPS.

    iPhone XR Camera

Unfortunately, the lack of a second camera has a few downsides. You won’t be able to zoom in as close as in the X model. You also won’t be quite as impressed by the Portrait technology in the rear camera as you would be in X.

You’ll also find one in the front of the iPhone XR which can be used for taking selfies and using Face ID. This is a 7MP F 2.2 camera and it also has TrueDepth.

    Storage

If you’re interested in various storage options, you’re likely to lean towards the XR. It has three different capacity levels, as opposed to the two you find in the X. In this one, you can pick between 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB.

    Other Features

This phone has many of the features that you’ll find in the premium model, from Wi-Fi to Animoji. Let’s talk about them below.

    Processor

As mentioned above, iPhone XR has an Apple A12 Bionic chip with a neural engine. If you’re wondering about how the A12 Bionic processor compares to future models, then in a battle of iPhone XS vs XR, both would win. This is the same processor as in the newer model and it is slightly better than the old A11 Bionic chip found in the iPhone X.

    OS

While the iPhone X range is no longer the newest and has been dethroned by the iPhone 11 line-up, it continues to receive updates. That’s why, if you pick up an iPhone XR, you will still be able to use the latest iOS software.

As of right now, XR runs iOS 13 as all the newest Apple phones do. If you buy it now, you can still expect it to continue to get updated in the future, as Apple already promised an update to iOS 14 during the course of 2020.

    Battery

You’ll also be able to enjoy wireless charging here, with the support for Qi chargers. XR has been praised for its efficient battery. If you’ve ever used an iPhone, you probably know that it’s difficult to go a whole day without charging it. However, iPhone XR has a remarkably reliable battery.

If you use it a lot of battery-draining things such as watching videos or playing games, then you should still be ready for a recharge. Otherwise, enjoy charging it when you go to bed and not worrying for the whole day.

    Face ID

Like the iPhone X, iPhone XR doesn’t come with Touch ID or a fingerprint sensor. Instead, it relies on Face ID to help you use its features. You can use Face ID for unlocking the phone, using Apple Pay, and some apps that support it.

Face ID also allows you to use Animoji, this model’s version of animated emojis that you can use for some fun with friends and family.

    Overall

This is a really solid phone that has a lower (but not low) price than the iPhone X. It shines in terms of battery life, design with a range of beautiful colors, and a larger screen. However, it still doesn’t match the slightly older X — at least not completely.

    Pros

    • A more affordable price than the iPhone X
    • Large, vibrant screen
    • Six gorgeous colors to choose from
    • Face ID is included and it still works well
    • Three different storage options
    • It offers dual SIM
    • The processor Apple used here is a newer model

    Cons

    • Definitely not a one-hand phone (it’s bulky and heavy)
    • Lower screen quality than in the X
    • Just one rear camera
    • No 3D Touch

Which is better: iPhone X vs XR?

We’ve talked about these two Apple smartphones at length, so now it’s time to truly settle the score on the iPhone X vs XR battle. Which one is better for you? Which one should you buy?

It’s important for you to know that neither of these phones is the newest Apple smartphone. Apple’s latest model is the iPhone 11 line, and for budget phones, the iPhone SE. Even within the X line, the newest model is the XS, which is better than both of these phones.

It’s difficult to truly say which of these two phones is better, as they both excel at different things. However, if you want a more premium product with a better camera and display, you should choose iPhone X.

What is the difference between iPhone XR and X?

We’ve talked about the differences in our in-depth reviews above, but to give you a clear overlook, let’s take one final parting glance at them. Why is the iPhone X better than iPhone XR? What makes it the best phone within its price range? Read our iPhone comparisons to find out.

iPhone X vs XR — what does X offer that XR doesn’t?

    • A better display (OLED vs LCD)
    • It can be used with one hand by most people
    • Better build quality
    • Double camera at the back
    • Better Portrait Mode
    • Higher display ratio (despite the smaller screen)

iPhone XR vs X — what does XR offer that X doesn’t?

    • Dual SIM capability
    • A larger screen (6.1″ vs 5.8″)
    • Many more case colors
    • A better battery life

As you can see, there are many pros and cons to each one of these phones. Your ultimate choice should fall down to personal preference and what you want to get out of your Apple smartphone.

Why is the iPhone XR cheaper than the X?

iPhone XR is indeed cheaper than the X, and the answer is simple: this is Apple’s budget model. While it still costs more than some Android smartphones, it is definitely cheaper than some of the other Apple devices.

Apple made this one more affordable for you, but at a compromise. The build quality in the XR is worse than in the X. It lacks that high-end feel and doesn’t have the same durability. The use of cheaper materials, such as aluminum, allowed Apple to lower the price range here.

The use of an LCD screen over an OLED also contributes to the fact that the XR is cheaper than the X. Overall, the biggest game-changers are things that affect the quality of the phone.

Which iPhone X is the best?

We touched upon this above, but this question calls for a longer answer. While you’ll surely like both iPhone X and XR, the best phone in Apple’s X line is actually the XS and the XS Max. If you want to buy yourself a truly premium product without paying too much (iPhone 11 is still priced very high), XS Max might be the way to go.

The iPhone XS Max has a better camera, is slightly more waterproof, and also has better battery life. On top of that, you’ll also enjoy the faster processor and improved graphics card in this model over the older ones.

    Summary

Apple iPhone has for years dominated the smartphone market. If you’re a fan of iOS and Apple products in general, you’re bound to like the iPhone X series too. However, it’s good that you took the time to research it. Apple products are expensive and they are quite the investment.

No matter which of these two phones you choose to buy, you’re likely going to be satisfied with them. Read their perks carefully and choose the one that suits your needs more!
